Jack Black and Jack White have finally recorded a song together

The dad joke of rock finally happened: Jack Black and Jack White recorded a new song together. Technically White joined Tenacious D as a unit, but as the old joke goes, this is as Jack Grey as it gets. The news broke during Tenacious D’s performance in Nashville this past Sunday. During the band’s set, Black told the crowd, “Jack White, we went over to his house today and recorded a brand new song,” according to the Tennessean. It turns out Tenacious D stopped by White’s recording studio in Nashville, and as such the song will be released on Third Man Records. No release date has been announced, nor did Black specify what White’s contribution to the song was. He could have added a shredding guitar solo, some backing vocals, or simply just produced it. Either way, it’s been a long time coming. (Read: Tenacious D Aimlessly Drift Through Half-Baked Post-Apocalypto) Given their separate celebrity statuses, Black and White have certainly known of each other’s existence for a while, and have been in the same award-show spaces before. But there has never been photographic evidence of the two meeting, or even being in the same room, until earlier this year. […]

Thom Yorke throws shade at MUSE and Sam Smith, cosigns Billie Eilish in new interview

This weekend’s edition of The Sunday Times contains a new interview with Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke. His conversation with interviewer Jonathan Dean focuses primarily on his newly released third solo album, ANIMA, and the complex emotions which inspired its creation. At one point, Yorke discusses the activities he relies on to alleviate his own anxiety. “Generally, really simple things,” he explains. “Running helps, and yoga is essential to me. Swimming. Physical stuff is really important. And reading a book!” He also “devours” music, noting, “It’s an essential part of me. I have to find new things to listen to all the time.” The fast-rising anti-pop star Billie Eilish is among those “new things” that’s he’s discovered. While sharing an anecdote about attending an Eilish concert with his daughter, he somewhat hilariously becomes sidetracked when mentioning the person he was sitting next to. “‘We sat down and what’s-his-name — the guy who did the Bond film we didn’t do?’ That would be Sam Smith, who sang the theme for Spectre when a Radiohead song was rejected. ‘That’s it. He stands behind us, and I’m sitting with my daughter, her friends and my girlfriend, when suddenly everyone goes, ‘Saaam!’’ Yorke squeals his name. ‘I’m, like, […]

Synth repairman accidentally gets high after touching old LSD on a vintage ’60s synthesizer*

Vintage Buchla Model 100 modular synthesizer from Cal State University, photo via KPIX 5 What would you do if you found a 50-year-old dose of LSD laying around? If you’re Eliot Curtis, the Broadcast Operations Manager for KPIX Television, you get high on acid… accidentally. Curtis recently undertook the project of restoring a vintage Buchla Model 100 modular synthesizer. According to San Francisco KPIX 5, the instrument had been sitting in a cold, dark room at Cal State University East Bay since the 1960s, so he lugged it home and began repairing it. After opening a red-paneled module on the synth, he noticed there was “a crust or a crystalline residue on it.” Naturally, he did what any person tasked with fixing up an old instrument would do: spray some cleaner on it, pick at the residue with his finger, and try to dislodge it by scratching it off. But 45 minutes later, he started to feel some tingling. It was the start of a nine-hour acid trip. (Read: Grateful Dead in 10 Songs) Three individual chemical tests identified the substance on the synth as LSD. An anonymous LSD researcher explained what happened. It turns out that when stored in […]

Contestants are forbidden from betting $69 or $666 on Jeopardy

Nerds are currently in a tizzy about Jeopardy! ’s reigning champion James Holzhauer. Using hyper-aggressive betting tactics backed with quick reflexes and a massive knowledge base, the pro sports bettor has been breaking records on a near nightly basis and is close to surpassing Ken Jennings’ $2.5 million in total winnings. During a discussion about Holzhauer’s unique gaming style, Jennings divulged details of a rule that prevents contestants from wagering certain amounts during Final Jeopardy. The conversation started after Jennings quipped that “I don’t feel I get enough credit for making small, sensible Jeopardy wagers, which helped the show with its prize budget.” After a fan joked about him consistently betting $69 each night, Jennings confirmed that the amount was now “officially forbidden on Jeopardy now, as of last year.” Turns out $69 is one of five banned wager amounts, though the other four are drastically less sexy. The devil’s number, $666, is similarly banned, as are three numbers associated with neo-Nazi propaganda ($14, $88, and $1488). this is officially forbidden on Jeopardy now, as of last year.not even joking. — Ken Jennings (@KenJennings) April 23, 2019 In other Jeopardy! related news, in March, Alex Trebek revealed that he was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic […]
