Comedian Brian Posehn announces guest-heavy Grandpa Metal album, covers A-ha’s “Take on Me”: Stream

Comedian Brian Posehn has recruited an all-star list of musicians for his first metal album, Grandpa Metal. The funny man has previewed the LP with a brutal cover of the A-ha hit “Take on Me”. The towering comic teamed up with Anthrax’s Scott Ian, Fall Out Boy’s Joe Trohman, and Dethklok’s Brendon Small to create the album, which was produced by Jay Rustin. The 14-song tracklist features 12 original compositions, plus the A-ha cover and a rendition of the novelty dance song “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)” by Ylvis. Among the guests on the album are Slipknot’s Corey Taylor and Steel Panther’s Michael Starr, who both contribute vocals to “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)”. Elsewhere, such musicians as Amon Amarth’s Johan Hegg, Slayer’s Gary Holt, Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil, Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump, “Weird Al” Yankovic, and others appear on the album. Posehn’s cover of “Take on Me” turns the ’80s synth-pop classic into an extreme metal track, complete with guttural vocals. The song features guest appearances from Testament’s Chuck Billy, Exodus’ Steve “Zetro” Souza, and late Huntress singer Jill Janus. “I honestly feel that every good song would be better if it were heavy metal,” […]

Marilyn Manson to support Ozzy Osbourne on 2020 North American tour

Marilyn Manson, photo by Raymond Ahner / Ozzy Osbourne, photo by David Brendan Hall The Antichrist Superstar will be teaming up with the Prince of Darkness in 2020. Marilyn Manson has just been announced as the support act on Ozzy Osbourne’s rescheduled North American tour. This leg of Ozzy Osbourne’s “No More Tours 2” farewell trek was originally slated to kick off in May 2019, with Megadeth as support. However, the tour was postponed when Ozzy sustained serious injuries in a fall at home, forcing him to nix his 2019 dates. While the dates for the rescheduled North American shows were immediately announced upon the tour’s postponement, it was unclear who would be opening for Ozzy in 2020. Megadeth themselves had canceled their remaining 2019 tour dates when frontman Dave Mustaine was diagnosed with throat cancer, so their status was up in the air. Now we know that Manson will be Ozzy’s lone support act on the outing, which kicks off May 27th in Atlanta, Georgia. The tour runs through a July 31st show in Las Vegas, Nevada, with tickets available here. “Marilyn is killer live,” said Ozzy in a press release. “He’s so f**king out there, and if I […]

Jasta unleashes new songs featuring Trivium’s Matt Heafy and Killswitch Engage’s Jesse Leach: Stream

Jamey Jasta is set to drop The Lost Chapters – Volume 2, his third solo album under the Jasta moniker. The Hatebreed frontman has unveiled tracks from the collaborative LP — “When the Contagion Is You” featuring Trivium singer Matt Heafy, and “Strength to Draw the Line” featuring Killswitch Engage vocalist Jesse Leach. Like he did with his previous solo albums, Jasta recruited a cast of heavy metal stalwarts to guest on Volume 2, including Max Cavalera of Soulfly, George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher of Cannibal Corpse, and Kirk Windstein of Crowbar, among others. It also marks the first new music from Jasta’s solo project since its prequel, 2017’s The Lost Chapters. As he did on the first Lost Chapters album, which closed with the Dio-era Black Sabbath song “Buried Alive”, Jasta closes Volume 2 with another metal cover, taking on Megadeth’s classic “Holy Wars… The Punishment Due”. (Read: Jamey Jasta Feuds with CHVRCHES Over Festival Lineup) “It was overdue for another solo release since the last one had come out in 2017,” Jasta said in a press release. “The timing for new music is perfect. It was important to me for this new collection to have the compilation feel of the first one while […]

Metallica postpone tour as James Hetfield enters rehab

Metallica frontman James Hetfield has entered a treatment program for addiction, forcing the band to postpone their upcoming tour of Australia and New Zealand. The metal icon famously struggled with alcohol abuse throughout the band’s career but entered rehab in the early 2000s, and was sober for many years. Unfortunately, the band divulged this evening (September 27th) that Hetfield has relapsed. The rest of Metallica — Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo — issued the following statement via the band’s official website: We are truly sorry to inform our fans and friends that we must postpone our upcoming tour of Australia and New Zealand. As most of you probably know, our brother James has been struggling with addiction on and off for many years. He has now, unfortunately, had to re-enter a treatment program to work on his recovery again. We fully intend to make our way to your part of the world as soon as health and schedule permit. We’ll let you know as soon as we can. Once again, we are devastated that we have inconvenienced so many of you, especially our most loyal fans who often travel great distances to experience our shows. We appreciate your […]

Panic! at the Disco’s Brendon Urie debuts fierce heavy metal song: Stream

Late last year, Panic! At The Disco frontman Brendon Urie promised to launch a “metal project” in the near future. After previously teasing with a raging version of the band’s “The Calendar”, today Urie returns with an all-new original heavy metal song. Urie debuted the track during a Twitch stream filmed inside his studio, as Alternative Press points out. A fierce and explosive listen, the as-yet-untitled track features some especially guttural screams courtesy of Urie himself (he even points to his throat in the video). Quite a shift from his complete pop turn with Taylor Swift on “ME!”. (Buy: Tickets to Panic! at the Disco’s Upcoming Shows) Check it out below. [embedded content] Urie’s metal adventures stem from his desire to challenge himself and try out new things musically. “I still feel like I can do more,” Urie told Rock Sound last December. He continued, “Even from song to song within one album I feel like things could change even more drastically, and maybe that’ll happen as time goes on. I still have so many different things that I want to do, particularly in terms of genres.” No word on whether fan Mayor Pete Buttigieg is on board for this version […]

Zac Efron: Metallica’s James Hetfield “crushed” his role as a cop in Ted Bundy movie

James Hetfield in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, via Brian Douglas (COTA Films) The new movie Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile premieres on Netflix and in select movie theaters this Friday (May 3rd), and actor Zac Efron, who stars as serial killer Ted Bundy, has nothing but praise for Metallica frontman James Hetfield’s role in the film. Hetfield plays Officer Bob Hayward, the highway patrolman who arrested Bundy in 1975. While it may be his first dramatic acting role, Hetfield had previous experience working with the film’s director, Joe Berliner, who co-directed the infamous Metallica documentary Some Kind of Monster. Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Efron was asked by the late-night host about working with the Metallica legend, and the actor immediately applauded at hearing Kimmel utter Hetfield’s name. “He comes on the set, and it’s one of the more pivotal moments,” began Efron. “It’s the moment that Ted actually got caught for the first time — he ran a stop sign. And James Hetfield plays the policeman that picks him up.” Efron continued, “And James Hetfield, to his credit, and absolutely nailed the part, he just crushed it. It’s like he’s been acting his own life. […]
