How Post Malone Helped Redefine Pop Stardom for a New Decade

This article is sponsored by StubHub. Back when he was still attending high school and bumming it part-time at the Chicken Express, Austin Richard Post was voted “Most Likely to Become Famous” by his classmates. Three years and countless tragic hairstyles later, those same classmates — and millions of other listeners — were telling him “Congratulations.” That’s something to think about as that same artist now plays to thousands a night across the country while on his nearly year-long “Runaway Tour.” (Buy: Tickets to Upcoming Post Malone Shows) It didn’t take Post Malone long to become a burgeoning hip-hop star once he uploaded his first single, “White Iverson”, to SoundCloud in February 2015 at the age of 19. He released an accompanying music video in July; within a month, it had amassed more than a million views, and Post signed with Republic Records in August. Star-studded collaborations — including a feature on Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo track “Fade” — and an opening slot on Justin Bieber’s Purpose Tour followed, and by the time he released his debut album, Stoney, in December 2016, Post Malone had arguably become rap’s hottest newcomer. The trap-pop-country hybrid debuted at No. 6 on […]

Kodak Black hit with two new felony charges, faces additional 60 years in prison

Kodak Black is facing up to 60 additional years in federal prison after being hit with two more felony gun charges. Three days ago, the rapper received a a 46-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to federal weapons charges. A day later it came to light he’d sent a prison guard to the hospital after grabbing his testicles in a fight. Now, as the Miami Herald reports, the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office has handed the rapper two new felony counts for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. One charge stems from a gun purchased in January, while the other is linked to a gun found on him when he was arrested in Miami in May. As Kodak has been labeled a “habitual offender,” he could face up to 30 full years for each count. Kodak’s lawyer Bradford Cohen addressed the new charges in a statement to XXL. “This is what happens when the government feels like they lost when a young man [gets] 46 months on a filing a false document.” He continued, “Miami has charged him with the purchase of the weapons, because of a little rarely known law if you had a juvenile prior you can’t possess a weapon until you are 24. JAY-Z to purchase NFL team: Report

Earlier this week, JAY-Z’s Roc Nation struck an entertainment and social partnership with the NFL. The deal makes the billionaire rapper the league’s new “live music entertainment strategist” as well provides him with greater influence in key social initiatives. But if you believe TMZ, JAY-Z’s involvement won’t end there. Turns out JAY-Z is set to acquire a “significant ownership interest” in an NFL team, and “it is going to happen in the near future,” TMZ reports. The identity of the team has not yet been revealed. JAY-Z wants to become an NFL owner “because he’s a huge fan, already has a sports business, and wants to continue to be a change agent for the NFL,” the report adds. Roc Nation Sports, the sports talent agency founded by JAY-Z, represents several current NFL players, including New York Giants star Saquon Barkley, Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley, and Pittsburgh Steelers receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. However, because JAY-Z “is not an NFL agent and does not take part in the operations of the NFL players in Roc Nation,” he’s apparently in the clear to purchase an NFL team, TMZ contends. JAY-Z previously owned a minority stake in the Brooklyn Nets before selling […]

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib share new track “The Next Day” featuring Oh No: Stream

After three long years of anticipation, Indiana MC Freddie Gibbs and veteran producer Madlib finally returned last month with their sophomore album, Bandana. Now just weeks later, the hip-hop duo is back with another new track, “The Next Day”. A contribution to the Adult Swim Singles series, “The Next Day” features a guest verse from Madlib’s younger brother, Oh No. With the sort of soul sampling production we know and love from MadGibbs, the track feels like it could be featured in Eddie Murphy’s upcoming Ray Moore biopic Dolemite Is My Name. In fact, it even opens with a fitting reference as Gibbs spits, “Pulling stunts in my GTR/ 1990, Dolemite in momma’s VCR.” Take a listen to Freddie Gibbs & Madlibs’ “The Next Day” below. MadGibbs’ Bandana arrived five years after their collaborative debut, 2014’s Piñata. They’ll be supporting the record on the road through fall. Appropriately, given the release of “The Next Day”, Freddie Gibbs and Mad Lib are set to appear at the Adult Swim Festival in Los Angeles this November. Get tickets to all their upcoming dates here. Ranking: Every Lollapalooza Lineup from Worst to Best

Rank and File finds us sorting through an exhaustive, comprehensive body of work or collection of pop-culture artifacts. This time, we celebrate Lollapalooza by determining which installment of the festival was the greatest of them all. The dog days of summer mean that Lollapalooza is just around the corner, and thousands of music fans are about to descend upon Chicago’s Grant Park. It’s hard to believe that, in 1991, Perry Farrell created the festival as a showcase for Jane’s Addiction‘s last hurrah. Of course, many things have changed since its initial heyday in the ’90s. In the US, Lolla has grown and evolved drastically from its touring festival roots, having survived a hibernation from 1997 until 2003, in addition to its canceled 2004 installment. Since then, Lollapalooza has settled down in the Windy City, gradually expanding from two to three to four days. (Though, one could argue the fest’s touring spirit lives on through its international counterparts, which have sprung up in Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, and Sweden.) Throughout its history, some of the most iconic acts in music have performed at the festival, from Paul McCartney to Kanye West to Arcade Fire, in addition to up-and-coming talent that have […]

In an interview with Fandango, director Jon Favreau explained, “They were all collaborating with her and helping to bring this new piece of music into a film where there’s already a very established musical personality to the piece. Rihanna hints at possible title for new reggae album

Rihanna has had her Navy itching with anticipation since teasing a new album back in winter. Now, in a new interview with T Magazine, she’s confirmed that she’s still hard at work on the effort — and that fans may be impacting the final product. The Barbados Ambassador reiterated that the project is indeed a reggae record, though she refrained from giving any firm timeline for its completion. She added that she’s leaning towards calling the LP — which will mark her ninth full-length — R9, a name that her Navy has been drilling into her head. “So far it’s just been R9, thanks to the Navy,” she said. “I’m about to call it that probably, ’cause they have haunted me with this ‘R9, R9, when is R9 coming out?’ How will I accept another name after that’s been burned into my skull?” (Read: 10 Most Anticipated Pop Albums of 2019) Elsewhere, RiRi once again touched on her deteriorated relationship with Drake. Last summer, she said the pop stars “don’t have a friendship now, but we’re not enemies either,” so it shouldn’t be surprising that she doesn’t see another “Work”-level collaboration in the near future. “Not anytime soon, I don’t see it happening,” […]
